Bolton has always been an extraordinary place. It was for many years a major centre of the cotton textile industry with spinning, weaving, dyeing and bleaching. It was a place of engineering excellence from textile machinery through to railway locomotives. Many of its public buildings are of a high calibre, testifying to the town's wealth and Victorian confidence. Its cast-iron market hall and magnificent Town Hall stand out.
