When a section of the summit level of the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal at Nob End, Little Lever gave way in 1936 it caused flooding and major disruption blocking the nearby River Irwell. The breach eventually led to the closure of the entire canal. The pictures taken by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Co and the Manchester Ship Canal Company show the damage. The breach is still visible today. 2012
