Fletcher-Burrows were colliery owners in the Atherton area of Lancashire. They owned and operated a large number of colliery and coal-mining operations. They were considered 'good employers' and built a 'model village' at Howe Bridge. In 1921 they commissioned the famous cartoonist W Heath-Robinson to produce a calendar for the following year. (SEARCH in the site box for "Heath Robinson" to see the cartoons) In 1929 Fletcher Burrows was incorporated into Manchester Collieries. Photography: The name of the photographer is unknown. Whoever it was produced a remarkable series of images both above and below ground. In several shots he has attempted quite deliberately to capture faces and expressions, this is particularly obvious in his sometimes intimate photos of pit-brow lassies. (SEE HRS 1515 in particular)
