This remarkable photo shows a man, probably a fireman, testing for methane gas with an unprotected gauze safety lamp. It appears there has been a roof-fall. It is of course a posed photograph as flash-powder has been used to illuminate the scene. Nevertheless, it clearly shows the risks men took underground and their lack of protection (no safety helmet) and potential for injury. KH
