HRS 1514 Coalmining, fan engine, Gibfield side mechanism

Steam engines were used to provide both compressed air and more importantly fan ventilation underground. Air was forced underground at the downcast shaft and the foul air emitted at the upcast shaft. It is also known as a fan-engine.
