HRS 1465 Furnace ventilation shaft at Haigh 1980s

Coal mines were often ventilated in the early days using a fire in a furnace at the bottom of a shaft. The chimney created the necessary draught to draw the stale air out of the mine. The process was not without risk as it also drew the highly inflammable and explosive methane gas as well.
