The ancient lost landscape of Cockey Moor.
The Cockey Moor coalfield near Ainsworth is a relatively unknown coalfield possibly dating back into the medieval period. There was extensive 'ladder-pit' shallow mining in the 18th century and further mining in the 19th. In the 1790s a tunnel was constructed almost 200 feet feet down to drain water away from not just the Cockey Moor coalfield, but other newer deeper mines. The tunnel known as the Cockey Moor Culvert or sough runs over 2 miles under Radcliffe emerging on the riverside at Mount Sion, in the Irwell Gorge.
