HRS 303 MBBC, Canal overflow to Irwell, Hinds, Bury 1971
At Hinds near Bury, the River Irwell flows extremely close and alongside the canal, although at a much lower elevation. This allowed canal engineers to construct a simple overflow spillway from the Bolton Bury Canal into the river. The main water supply for the canal summit level entered the canal within just a few hundred yards and a fail-safe to ensure storm water went into the river Irwell.
