The view is west. On the left is Hardcastle's textile dyeing, bleaching, printing and finishing works. On the right is the former church of St John. Notice the number of mill chimneys in the photo and the local people walking towards the camera on the right-hand side. The sandy area to the extreme right was sand and gravel excavated from the Whitefield to Radcliffe Railway Cutting. Later it became Coronation Park.
