Radcliffe north of Manchester was an important town in the manufacture and finishing of cotton goods.

In 1780 Sir Robert Peel built a water-powered cotton spinning mill at Radcliffe Bridge. Sadly there are now few remains to be seen, the mill having been destroyed by fire in 1851.
