HRS 1682 Flat-drawn glass-making Pilkingtons, St Helens
A rod has been dipped in the glass tank to check the state of the glass. The glass blob on the end of the rod cools rapidly and then splinters dramatically.
This is an entry from my diary 16th July 1980. "The foreman did a special test with a metal bar to discover the temperature of the furnace. It involved pushing the rod into the melt and after withdrawal seeing how much the bar had bent." KH
