HRS 4203 Manchester, Wishing Well Restaurant excavation 1973

Chris Makepeace holds an iron bullet-shaped wrought-iron object found in the well shaft. At the time it was a mystery as to what it actually was, it is now known that it was used to see how much water was in the cistern. It would be lowered to 'plumb the depths' and would have been attached to probably a chain of known length and marked in feet and inches.
