This small quarry (=delf) was in its day the entrance to the Duke of Bridgewater's extensive underground canal system. The two tunnels led directly into the Duke's coalmines, there was an inclined plane and special narrow boats termed 'starvationers' were used to transport the coal. Not only did the tunnels drain the workings but they also provided water for the Bridgewater Canal opened in 1761.
