In this illustration two women are shown pushing a truck with baskets or coal on them. There is some roof height allowing them to be relatively upright. Notice the candle on the truck. Explosion caused by sparks and flames were commonplace in coal mines because of methane escaping from the coal. In the right proportion to air it was devastatingly explosive and killed many people.
