Wray Castle is really a house built in the Gothic Revival style now owned by the National Trust. It was built by Dr James Dawson, a Liverpool surgeon 1840-7 to the designs of HP Harper. The grounds have a wide range of trees including a mulberry tree planted by William Wordsworth in 1845. The interior of the house is disappointing as most of the fixtures and fittings have been removed over the years. The open space beyond the entrance is illuminated by a spectacular attic light, a redeeming feature. KH
