The illustration shows Workington Harbour on the cusp of great change in the middle of the 19th century. It was soon to be a major centre for iron and steel production because of its proximity to Cumbria's phosphor-free iron ore and the development of the Bessemer furnace and of course coal.
The photo shows on the right "staithes" or "hurries" where coal was brought down from local pits to be put on ships.
