Carlisle Guild Hall and Green market 1895

Carlisle is the principal town of Cumbria close the Scottish Border. This 19th century photo shows a street market known as the Green market presumably from the market produce on sale. There is a horse and cart - centre. Notice the lady on the right crossing over towards the man on the left selling his goods from baskets. The shops at the rear are also interesting Johnston and Company selling both tea and coffee. On the extreme right a mother and child make their towards the main thoroughfare. Photo Ref: ct0775
