The Barton Swing aqueduct was constructed for the new Manchester Ship Canal to replace James Brindley's Bridgewater Canal aqueduct. The 300 ft long trough swings on a central pivot with rubber-faced tapering wedges holding the water intact in the trough. The unique structure was designed by Edward Leader Williams and built by Andrew Handyside of Derby. It was officially opened in in 1894.
