The Bridgewater Canal was what might be called Britain's first major industrial canal running from the Duke of Bridgewater's coalmines at Worsley to outskirts of Manchester. (1761) The genius of James Brindley the canal engineer included the construction of an aqueduct over the Mersey and Irwell Navigation. In later years this was demolsihed to make way for the Manchester Ship Canal. The aqueduct being replaced by a swnging aqueduct. The canal system was soon extended to Castlefield in Manchester and on into Cheshire and South Lancashire. Although we have created a separate gallery for the Manchester Ship Canal, they are in fact inextricably linked. KH
