The looks east towards Blackburn Street. The tar boiler is visible in the centre of the road along with a tar barrel on the left. It would appear that the gaps around sandstone setts in the road are being 'tarred' ready for surfacing. The area in the foreground of the photo appears to have already been surfaced. Notice the many small shops especially on the left.
