According to the Ingleborough Estate guide to their Nature Trail, the grotto was built 'to provide employment in the early 19th century' and to provide shelter and a viewpoint. It is a curious, if not ugly structure, made from the local limestone. The manner in which the roof was formed is strongly reminiscent of similar structures in lime kilns, which is, perhaps, not surprising.
