The rock type at Hodge Close Quarry was worked as the local green slate but is probably Ordovician volcaniclastic sandstone or mudstone. The sandstone or mudstone is partially metamorphosed. The structure suggests dynamic fluvial activity before consolidation. Hodge Quarry is near Coniston in the Lake District. "Seathwaite Fell Sandstone Formation - Volcaniclastic-sandstone And Volcaniclastic-breccia. Sedimentary Bedrock formed approximately 451 to 461 million years ago in the Ordovician Period. Local environment previously dominated by shallow seas." BGS
