HRS 3689 Clitheroe, Pegs o' Nells well

Peg o' Nells Well is situated close to the River Ribble at Brungerley Bridge near Clitheroe in the grounds of Waddow Hall. There are various stories and legends some concerning ghosts, but the headless statue may relate to the story of how following a 'sudden flush of the river' as a local preacher crossed the stepping stones he fell into the torrent. Everything was blamed on Nell, and as "Peg stood quiet enough near a spring" with one blow of an axe she was beheaded - hence the statue. It is likely that the well actually was Celtic and that somewhere in this mixed up story a Celtic spirit was blamed for soaking the the preacher.
