An ironworks ideally situated in the 1780s as the nearby towns of Oldham and Ashton-under-Lyne began to develop. It was a substantial works, but was abandoned in 1963. Some of the original housing provided for workers still survives. The area is now almost unrecognisable as it has become a country park.
