HRS 493 Lancaster Castle, John o' Gaunt's Gate 1980s

The present Lancaster Castle occupies a site of earlier structures including part of a Roman structure. However the whole structure has variously altered over the years. Lancaster Castle John o' Gaunt's gatehouse dates back to c1400 and the inner arch is even earlier. The present interior includes a Shire Hall and Jail, which at the time of writing (2011) is still occupied and soon to close. However, Lancaster Castle is famous as being the place where in the 17th century the so-called Lancashire Witches were tried, found guilty and hanged.
