HRS 519 MBBC Whittaker Bridge pit wharf

The high wall on the right-hand side of the image was the dock for the Whittaker Bridge coal pit which closed in the 1880s. The main shaft was with 15 feet of the canal beyond the wall on the extreme right-hand side. Coal was lowered by cranes from the top of the dock into coal boats moored below.
