HRS 526 MBBC towline grooves Radcliffe 1976

A wrought-iron bar has been fixed to the brickwork of a canal bridge near Radcliffe to prevent 'grooving' by the hemp towlines used to haul the coal boats. Over time the ropes have cut deeply into the ironwork as each horse and boats passed by.
