Pendlebury, St Augustine's Pendlebury 1977

St. Augustine's Pendlebury, is a magnificent 19th century church. Designed by Bodley it is a Grade 1 listed building. Known locally as the 'Miners Cathedral', due to its almost cathedralesque stature, in the heart of a one time coal-mining community, it stands as the gift of Edward Heywood and was established within the Catholic tradition of the Church of England. It was built with a capacity for hundreds of worshipers.Today the congregation is around 40. Originally the church was designed to have a bell tower on the southwest side, higher than the main roof, but lack of funds meant the tower was never built. This 1977 view still has an industrial aspect with a large chimney stack visible in the distance.
