HRS 2497 Howk Bobbin mill 1857 Caldbeck

The old bobbin mill, drying shed, and waterwheel pit have preserved in an area west of the village known as "The Howk". According to the English Dialect Dictionary a howk is an area that has been excavated. The valley is in limestone and shows some evidence of quarrying. The waterwheel pit was about 42 feet in diameter and about 3 feet wide, and was thought to be one of the largest in England.
