The Bacup Britannia Coconut Dancers are unique. They dance through the streets of the Lancashire town of Bacup every Easter Saturday, come rain or shine.
The origin of the dance is uncertain, one school of thought is that it was brought in by Cornish quarrymen who came to work in the local quarries. The black faces are almost certainly a survival of using black to ward off evil spirits. They wear wooden clogs and have small wooden discs (probably coconut discs originally) which they click together in a rhythmic dance.
