The Peak Forest Canal dates back to 1794 and originally linked the Ashton Canal with the Peak District. The was a tramway between limestone quarries and the canal at Buxworth/Bugsworth Basin near Whaley Bridge. Later a junction to the rest of the canal network via the Macclesfield Canal was created.
