HRS 4205c Manchester, Piccadilly Hospital design, Maxwell and Tuke 1872 competition

The design for a new hospital in Piccadilly Manchester went out to architectural competition. One firm, who were later to become world-famous for the design of Blackpool Tower, Maxwell and Tuke submitted a design that 'took the hospital and patients above Manchester's smoke and grime'. It did not win, but clearly the wrought-iron part of their suggestion was reproduced in steel and forms the base of Blackpool Tower.
