Blaenau Ffestiniog is dominated by slate quarrying. The purple slate of the area was exported all over the world, demand grew during the industrial revolution to housing slate in the cities and Blaenau Ffestiniog thrived. It was once the largest and most important slate quarrying area in the world. It is also famous for the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railwat that transported slate down to the sea at Portmadoc (Porthmadog).
