An important little town and an important junction on the west coast main railway line. In the 19th century it became a railway town with a large ironworks close to the centre of th town. Its railway station featured in the film "Brief Encounter" a David Lean film (1945) featuring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson and is now acafe and visitor centre.
