HRS 7764 Ingleton, Thornton Force 1980s

A classic geological site. The river has cut through the overlying Carboniferous limestone forming a waterfall. Immediately beneath the limestone is the Ingleton Series, mainly Ordovocian grits and flags. The site is a classic unconformity, the Carboniferous sedimentary limestones being deposited on the eroded surface of the underlying Silurian rocks.
