HRS 4176 Ardwick Tunnels, Soot slicks on roof of chamber

One of the largest of the underground chambers cut into Manchester's soft red sandstone would have easily accommodated four double-decker buses. It is clear from the photo that the cavern worked worked down. The sooty slick marks present on the roof of the cavern show how the cavern was illuminated during construction. There were/are no holes for timbers in the upper part indicative of downward working. There was again some evidence that the chamber had been at least parially filled with water. KH
