Orthocone nautiloid - septum and siphuncle

The fossil reveals details of its interior. the divisions or septa are clearly visible. Each septum represents a period of growth, the animal living in the wider end of the coned-shaped fossil. Also visible is a circular disc with a raised button-like protuberance. This is the remains of a siphuncle, a buoyancy tube connecting the various chambers of the fossil.
