A close up photo of a Lancashire Cotton Industry shuttle, known as a 'kissing shuttle'. The reason for the unusual name is that the weaver had to suck the end of rough cotton through the eye or hole before weaving could begin. This resulted in mouth ulcers and in some cases cancer of the mouth and the shuttles were replaced with self-loading shuttles.
