4/7 The Old Pele and Rectory Farmhouse and Barn
II*
House/Post Office and farm, formerly Rectory and barns. Probably early C15 tower house, with late C15 or early C16 hall range, altered in late C17 and late C18, with early C19 barns and rear extensions of 1879. Large blocks of coursed red sandstone to tower and hall, with extensions of hammer dressed red sandstone; Welsh and green slate roofs, stone chimney stacks. Tower of 2 storeys (probably originally 3 storeys), single bay, to right, has walls over one metre thick, roof now gabled. C20 French window with plain late C18 surround and 2-pane sash window above in similar surround. End wall has filled ground floor entrance (of undetermined date) with small filled window above. Rear wall has small filled ground floor window, with similar window above of single pane. Interior has ground floor vaulted chamber with newel stair, now filled, in north-east angle; entrance from hall is probably C15, later fireplace in rear wall. Upper chamber has remains of stone dividing wall, probably C16, with fireplace in rear and side walls; probable garderobe outlet behind side fireplace; filled window covered by hall wall, suggests hall is of later build than tower. Hall range to left of 2 storeys, 3 bays, has similar stonework to tower, with walls one metre thick, rear wall now internal. Front has been refenestrated in late C18, sash windows with glazing bars to left, 2-pane sashes to right; left ground floor window has remains of arched stonework for original opening. Late C17 entrance (formerly with segmental pediment) has been filled and re-cut with plain C18 surround; C19 top glazed door. Eye level quoin stone right (partly covered by extension) has incised sundial. L-shaped buildings adjoining left, Rectory Farm and barn, form integral part of the building (now a separate property) and although altered with C20 windows and entrance, it is included in the listing. Probably the most complete fortified vicarage in the area.
