A coal seam was exposed in the deep cliff side of the Irwell Gorge below Ashclough on the banks of the river Irwell near Ladyshore, Little Lever. The seam just visible in the centre of the image on the river side. The term 'mine' means seam in the Lancashire coalfield. 2003
