Roudsea Wood is a National Nature Reserve situated near the River Leven at Haverthwaite in South Cumbria. It contains many rare species flowers, insects and reptiles but was in earlier times a managed of coppiced woodland for charcoal making (for gunpowder), bark-stripping for tannery work as well as burning vegetation in the production of potash. There was even an iron-smelting site. There was also some quarrying of the local limestone.
