Steam-powered colliery winding engines, and ventilation fan engines were enormous, and no more so than at the Parsonage Pit Leigh and nearby Bickershawe Colliery. I was invited to photograph the last days of these great engines before they were confined to the scrap yard. (1970s)
Details: Parsonage no 1 shaft twin horizontal engine by Galloway 1920, no 2 shaft twin horizontal steam winding engine by Markham 1920, Bickershaw Colliery various horizontal engines, no 3 shaft by Walker Brothers 1891.
