The rapid expansion of Barrow-in-Furness in the UK led to an immediate need for workers' housing. A number of tenement blocks were built in the 'Glasgow style' to accommodate the influx of people. (1874-1884c)

Some of these tenement blocks still survive on Barrow Island (UK) and were in the main by the architects Austin and Paley and Lancaster, but constructed by an experienced Scottish builder. Barrow Island Community is overshadowed by the dockyard and related buildings, but there is still a school, some shops, public houses, and churches.
