A view from the CIS Co-operative Wholesale Society building of Victoria Station looking towards Strangeways. The phallic-looking tower is a Victorian structure for Strangeways Prison. It had a gantry for armed prison officers to look down on to the prison and served as principal updraft ventilation shaft for the prison. Notice the steam locomotive on the lefthand side.
