Capstan no 8 refers to a hydraulic capstan around which a rope was wound at the other end being hooked to a goods wagon at the other. The operator pressed a pedal at the capstan, water flowed and forced the capstan to turn and draw the wagon along. They were ingenious but very dangerous.
