Whitehaven 1848

A view across Whitehaven in 1848 looking towards the harbour. The discovery of coal and a good harbour led to the industrialisation of Whitehaven in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Several of the collieries were worked beneath the Irish Sea. In the print it is possible to see the so-called candlestick chimney of Wellington Pit.
