Pony haulage Brayton Domain no4 Pit c1910

One of a sequence of photographs presumably commissioned by Brayton Domain Collieres near Aspatria. The posed photo shows a pit pony with driver ready to haul a set of coal-tubs to the pit-bottom. Notice the position of the front legs of the horse suggesting they have been waiting for time for the photographer to take the picture. The roof is made of sandstone hence the lack of pit-props supporting it, however roof-falls often occurred even from the most stable looking roofs. The width of the haulage road suggests it is near the shaft mouthing or landing. Photo Ref: ct8219
