Hexagonals Quarry and DSW, Stephenson Ground, Cumbria
A quarry near Stephenson Ground worked for its unusual hexagonal-shaped pieces of rock. Geologically it is known as an ignimbrite a volcanic ash so hot it moulded and welded together, if the cooling conditions were such that it could cool slowly hexagonal columns were produced - an ideal material for local farmers building dry stone walls.
