HRS 4937 Humphrey Head cave entrance 2008

The origin of various caves including the one shown in the photo at Humphrey Head is widely debated. There is however strong evidence that the caves signficantly pre-date the Ice Age and were formed by groundwater dissolving the limestone. They are not seacaves. Subsequent infilling of the caves probably took place beneath the ice during the Ice Age, when the caves were flooded by water passing hydrastatically within the ice leaving behind sand, clay and gravel.
