Backbarrow, Blue Works, Kiln loaded butane burners lit

"Kiln loaded and main aperture sealed. Butane burners alight, then will be removed when the kiln is red hot (1800C?) and burner holes sealed up and left to cook for three weeks. Each kiln has underfloor ducts for draught and for taking gases produced in the firing to main chimney. At one time each kiln had its own firegrate and was heated by coke."
